Choosing Your Water Feature

When we think of the phrase “water feature” the picture that often comes to mind is some type of water fall. Did you know that there are actually several different types of water features available for residential and commercial properties? The main reason someone wants to build a water feature is for aesthetic appeal to the senses.  They are impressive to look at, pleasing to hear, and even the smell is serene.

Deciding on which feature is going to be the most pleasing for you and your guests is all based on personal appeal. Home and business owners each have different needs for their landscapes. In this article, you will find the many types of water features that exist and then you will be able to decide what works best for your home or business.

The most common water feature is the cascading water fall. These are easiest and cheapest to build when there is a natural hill in your landscape for the fall to be built on. Any landscape professional can obviously build you a hill, but be aware that your price will increase. These waterfalls are usually surrounded by an array of rocks and shrubbery to provide a natural look.

The second type of water feature is a pond. You can find these in the backyards of those who love to care for fish. Many people who chose to build ponds will fill their ponds with different types of gold fish and plant life that exist near water. These require more upkeep and require a clean out once a year.

The third type is a stream. These are often found in commercial properties or apartment complexes because of the area they require. Streams are usually framed with multiple rocks and they often lead to a second water feature such as a pond or water fall. Many people choose the stream because its sound isn’t too overbearing and it provides the aesthetic appeal most are seeking. 

When choosing a water feature the best advice I can offer is get a professional drawing.  Talk to a water feature expert about your hopes and see what it would look like before you put it in.
